Sicardi | Ayers | Bacino is pleased to feature a solo exhibition of impressive sculptures made with Carrara marble by Marie Orensanz for Artissima 2018. Sicardi | Ayers | Bacino's booth is located in the Back to the Futuresection, curated by Anna Daneri, Cristiano Raimondi, Gabriela Rangel, and Pietro Rigolo and dedicated to solo exhibitions of the great pioneers of contemporary art from 1980-1994. The section's goal is to spotlight international artists who have been fundamental to contemporary art.
Marie Orensanz was born in Mar del Plata, Argentina in 1936 and began her artistic career studying painting with two of the foundational artists of Argentine Modernism: Emilio Pettoruti and Antonio Seguí. In 1972, she moved to Milan. The proximity to Carrara and its marble quarries sparked her early production in stone. Three years later, she wrote a “Manifesto of Fragmentism,” outlining the conceptual basis of her works, many of which are deeply informed by the practice of drawing. Orensanz states, “The incomplete is a constant of my work, because I think that we are all fragments of a whole: at the same time, we are part of a past and of a future.” Her drawings include fragmented references to classical mathematics and physics that, along with the marble material, signify the past while the found materials signify the present; she uses these past and present fragments to communicate with the viewer. As they are just fragments, her work is open to interpretation. She joins together pieces of smooth Carrara marble and jagged found materials from daily life, contrasting the purity of the polished marble with the forceful, brutal task of extracting it. She has continued to work with fragments of marble, making them into books and sculptures, since the 1970s. In 1975, Orensanz moved to Paris, eventually becoming a naturalized French citizen. She lives and works in Buenos Aires and Paris.
