Liliana Porter

MALBA, Sala 3 (1º piso)

El hombre con el hacha y otras situaciones breves is the first solo exhibition of work by Liliana Porter at MALBA. It includes a site-specific installation created especially by the artist for Sala 3 at MALBA.

The installation contains a series of flat pallets, on which familiar characters complete specific tasks: building and destroying, scattering and gathering, leaving and returning, cleaning, sweeping, rising, falling, spilling, and weaving, among other activities. A selection of works on paper completes the show.

In the words of Liliana Porter: "My work includes prints, drawings, installations, objects, public art projects, photography, film and video. The recurring themes are based on reflections on the representation of the concept of time and the ambiguous space between what we call real and images. In recent years, almost without realizing it, a varied cast of characters have entered the work that are objects 'inanimate' little figures, ornaments, things found at flea markets. They act in monochrome and empty space in a nonlinear time."

On the occasion of the exhibition, MALBA will publish a new catalog of Liliana Porter's work, a comprehensive photographic record of the installation. In 2003, the museum co-edited with the Centro Cultural Recoleta the retrospective catalog Liliana Porter. Photography and Fiction (November 2003 - February 2004).
