In “Optical Blends and Chromatic Instabilities: The Physichromies of Carlos Cruz-Diez,” Arnauld Pierre unites Cruz-Diez’s roles as artist and researcher by highlighting the experiential nature of color in the Venezuelan’s Physichromies. Using the additive, subtractive, and reflective elements of color, Cruz-Diez synthesizes light and movement to create a symbiotic experience for the viewer that is immediate and recurring. María Elena Huizi , author of “Presence and Transformation of Color,” also cites the historical shifts in Cruz-Diez’s focus that exemplify the master’s ground-breaking influence and his commitment to color as a protagonist of his work.
This catalogue, published on the occasion of a solo exhibition at Sicardi Gallery, features several color plates of Carlos Cruz-Diez’s Physichromie series – including works shot at alternate angles, and images of his other explorations in color.
