OPENING RECEPTION WITH THE ARTIST AT SICARDI | AYERS | BACINO
Saturday, June 28 at 6:00 pm.
EXHIBITION DATES
June 28 - August 30, 2025.
Abstract Transitions features a selection of Chilindron's works of colorful hinged collapsible geometric acrylic sculptures that allow the viewer to move, fold and reconfigure its parts. Thus, the aesthetic experience of her works offers the viewer the option to go from passive contemplation to a performance that negotiates their shape and arrangement —within the limits of their flexible design. Her mode of production includes manual labor, and/or high-technology tools like laser cutters, 3D modelling, and robotic manufacturing. Abstract Transitions will be on view through August 30, 2025.
Marta Chilindon was born in La Plata, Argentina in 1951. However, in 1969 she settled in New York where she attended the State University of New York in Old Westbury. She apprenticed with Uruguayan masters of contemporary and modern art Luis Camnitzer and Julio Alpuy. Chilindron began to experiment with modular shapes in the 1970s, and later, in the 1990s, she worked with Eduardo Costa in conceptual projects that moved her towards public-space interventions.
The official unveiling of Unexpected Spaces (2025), a permanent three-part installation by Marta Chilindron at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) will take place at Sicardi Ayers Bacino on Saturday, June 28 at 5:30 pm. Chilindron will present the piece in a conversation with Melissa Brueggeman, Public Art Project Manager for Sicardi Ayers Bacino, and Caitlin Dashiell, Director of Creative Infrastructure for Metalab Studio. Installed on the Departures Level of the new IAH Terminal E, Unexpected Spaces explores the shifting effects of light through digital images printed on glass at a monumental scale. Chilindron combines translucent color and abstract geometry to create complex spatial relationships that engage and envelop the departing traveler.
Some of Chilindron's recent public artworks and exhibitions include: Unexpected Spaces, George Bush Intercontinental Airport (2025); Orange Cube, Hispanic Society Museum & Library, New York (2023); Parallel Greens, (wall sculpture), Jones School of Business, Rice University, Houston (2022); Houston Mobius, University of Houston, Texas (2019); GEO, Point of Contact Gallery, Syracuse University, Syracuse (2015); Expand//Fold//Collapse: Sculptures by Marta Chilindrón, The Great Hall Exhibitions, Institute of Fine Arts, New York University; Marta Chilindrón: Integral Geometries, Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA), Long Beach, California (2012).
