Press Release

Sicardi | Ayers | Bacino proudly presents Mercedes Pardo: Beyond Color in collaboration with the Otero Pardo FoundationThis is Mercedes Pardo’s first solo exhibition at Sicardi | Ayers | Bacino. The opening reception will take place on Friday, September 14, 6–8pm. Included below are excerpts from Rafael Santana’s text to accompany the show:

The beginnings of Mercedes Pardo (Venezuela, 1921-2005) as a professional artist place her within the so-called “informalist” movement, which dominated the scene of abstract art in the early 60s in Venezuela...The main subject of Mercedes Pardo’s investigation on shapes and colors in the pictorial plane developed—in my view—over two major regions: the configuration of space through the relation between shapes and colors, on one hand, and the exploration of unprecedented tonalities and subtle chromatic harmonies that were absolutely original, on the other...As we delve into Mercedes’s graphical work, particularly into the wide color planes in her serigraphs, we feel astonished as we appreciate colors for the first time, unusual colors whose existence was unknown to us, which are thrown into our visual field by the artist, with the purpose of evoking new sensations and feelings.

Born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1921, Pardo was a student of the Academy of Fine Arts in Venezuela, the Santiago Academy of Fine Arts in Chile, and the École du Louvre in Paris. Her work has been exhibited in solo and collective shows at galleries and museums throughout Venezuela, Chile, Spain, Mexico, Paris, Germany, Cuba, and the United States. Pardo participated in the International Exhibition of Abstract Art, São Paolo Biennale, Venice Biennale, National Biennial of Visual Arts in Caracas, and the Official Salon. During her final years, she worked and lived in San Antonio de Los Altos in the State of Miranda.
