Press Release

Please join us at Sicardi | Ayers | Bacino Saturday, June 8 for the opening reception for Alejandro Otero: Drawings, our second solo exhibition featuring the work of Venezuelan master Alejandro Otero [1921-1990, Venezuela], in our upstairs project room. In conjunction with the exhibition, the gallery is excited to present the publication Alejandro Otero. Drawings for Sculptures: The Dimension of Flight, published in 2019 by the Otero Pardo Foundation and the ArtesanoGroup Foundation and written by María Elena Ramos. Guest speaker Jorge Rivas, Frederick and Jan Mayer Curator of Latin American Art and department head at Denver Art Museum, will present the book and host a talk about Otero's life and work.

Alejandro Otero: Drawings features a grouping of Alejandro Otero's works on paper and three-dimensional works from the 1960s-1980s that demonstrate the relationship between the two media in the artist's productive process. The selected works on paper include sketches for large-format outdoor sculptures Otero designed during his time at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. Additionally on view are studies on paper the artist made for his iconic Coloritmo and Tablón series as well as a selection of realized Coloritmos.

Alejandro Otero. Drawings for Sculptures: The Dimension of Flight was published in 2019 by the Otero Pardo Foundation and the ArtesanoGroup Foundation and written by María Elena Ramos. The publication highlights a specific body of Otero’s work: over 700 preparatory sketches for his large-scale outdoor sculptures from 1967 to 1987. While many of his sculptures were realized worldwide, others come to life through his detailed and imaginative drawings and diagrams, which help us appreciate Otero as an artist and engineer. The book was published in English and in Spanish.
